Slangs are equivalent to the verbal cultural identity of a person; It makes it easier to identify the group or subculture that a person belongs to. Here in Sabah, we have our own slangs that help set us apart from the rest of the country. Unlike the rest of Malaysia, the slangs used here in Sabah are unique and only a true Sabahan could fathom its meanings. Unsurprisingly, it’s difficult for outsiders or non-Sabahans to comprehend many of the slangs as they contain a mix of local languages that are not spoken elsewhere.

속어는 한 사람의 언어 문화적 정체성이라 말할 수 있습니다. 이로 한 사람이 속해 있는 그룹이나 소문화를 쉽게 파악할 수 있습니다. 사바는 다른 지역들과 다른 우리만의 독특한 속어를 가지고 있습니다. 말레이시아의 다른 곳과 달리 사바에서 쓰이는 속어들은 독특하며 사바 사람들 만이 분별할 수 있는 뜻을 가지고 있습니다. 당연히 그 속어들은 어디에서도 쓰이지 않는 현지 언어와 섞여 쓰이기 때문에 외지인들이나 사바출신이 아니면 이해하기 어렵습니다.

Limpas → Excuse me or please give way.
(say: Limp Past)
Used when passing someone who’s in the way.

Miring → Askew
(say: Me Ring)
Used to imply that something is not aligned.

Instead of ‘kejar’, Sabahans use the word ‘bubut’ when running after someone.

Anu → Filler word while searching for words.

Sabahans have a tendency to start their sentences with this word. Even though it doesn’t mean anything, most Sabahans will automatically understand the meaning of a sentence when the word ‘Anu’ is included.

The most straightforward and used word of Sabah, ‘Bah’ has multiple meanings depending on the intonation. It’s also used at the end of sentences like the word ‘Lah’ that’s used in West Malaysia.

가장 쉽게 사용되는 말인 ‘Bah”는 억양에 따라 다양한 의미를 가집니다. 문장 끝에 사용되기도 하며 서말레이시아의 ‘Lah’와 같이 쓰입니다.
Bilang → To say

In Malay, ‘bilang’ means to count, but in Sabah ‘bilang’ means to say.

Typically used while reversing a car, ‘gostan’ is an older slang that’s more commonly used by older people.

Borrowed from the Chinese language, ‘Ngam-Ngam’ is used by Sabahans to emphasize flawless precision.

Atokui → To express disbelief

More widely used in rural Sabah, Atokui is to express disbelief over something amazing.

Uiseh → Wow in a complimenting tone.

An unofficial compliment to show that they are proud of someone’s accomplishment.

Uinah → Wow but in a sarcastic tone.

Opposite of ‘Uiseh’, typically used when teasing a person.

‘Uiseh’와 반대로 일반적으로 누군가를 놀릴 때 사용합니다.
Tapok → To hide something
(say: Tar Poke)
Instead of saying ‘sembunyi’, Sabahans say ‘Tapok’ which means to hide or hiding.

를 대신해 사바한은 숨다 또는 숨기다의 뜻으로 ‘Tapok’를 사용합니다.
